about

The four pieces included on this recording are compositional/technical studies that utilize a limited collection of six basic fingerings on the alto saxophone. My purpose was to explore and, to a certain extent, harness the widely varied and often chaotic sounds that can be achieved through articulation and embouchure manipulation.

In addition the process of recording on to tape created an analogous approach. At various times during the performances recording engineer Jameson Swanagon manipulated the tape recorder to create different results such as distortion, slight pitch alteration, etc. The recordings were then edited digitally maintaining the continuity of the original performances. While these pieces are still conceptually performance-based studies, I chose to embrace the possibilities of recording technology without the limitation of creating something that would be physically possible in performance.
